Livermore is located in the farthest eastern reaches of Alameda County. It is the third wealthiest mid-size town in the U.S. with a population of approximately 80,000.
The Livermore Valley Wine country is one of California’s oldest wine regions. Established in the 1760s by Spanish Missionaries who recognized the temperate grape-growing climate, commercial grape growing began in the 1840s. In the 1880’s Wente, Concannon, and Wetmore wineries were founded. Wente and Concannon Vineyards still produce award-winning wines to this day. The Livermore Valley put California on the World Wine Map by capturing America’s first gold medal for wine in the 1889 Paris Exposition. On average 4,000 acres of grapes are being harvested in the Livermore Valley today with more being added as the industry continues to grow. At present, the Livermore Valley Wine Country is home to 50 wineries.
Livermore is also home to the World’s Fastest Rodeo, first held in 1918; it is still considered a traditional outing to many local families. Traveling through the downtown, the annual Rodeo Parade heralding the beginning of rodeo weekend draws visitors from miles away. The Livermore Rodeo is a stop on the rodeo circuit for top cowboys competing in bareback, tie-down roping, team roping, bronc riding steer wrestling, barrel racing – and the event that everyone wants to see – Bull Riding! You’ll be inspired seeing the Rodeo Queen and her court gallop into the stadium, American flags streaming.
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory was established in 1952 as a research facility and was the largest employer in little Livermore at that time. Today the lab continues its research in Defense & Global Security, Energy, Engineering, High-Performance Computing, NIF & Photon Sciences, and Physical & Life Sciences. The lab’s outreach programs include Science on Saturday for local kids, as well as outreach programs for teachers, college and grad students.
Visit historic downtown Livermore, revitalized, vibrant, and pedestrian-friendly. After a day of wine tasting, downtown Livermore is the place to be for dining, window shopping, or taking in a live performance at the Bankhead Theater. Livermore is also proud of its retro 1940’s movie theater that offers beer, wine, and restaurant cuisine while enjoying a movie or a sporting event. A state-of-the-art digital 13-screen theater is just a stroll down the street.
