Welcome to Martinez

Martinez is a small, cozy town cradled between the Mount Diablo foothills and the Carquinez Straights. Martinez is the county seat of Contra Costa County. It is here that you will find county offices.

A bustling shipping port during the Gold Rush, Martinez was incorporated in 1876. During the Gold Rush, it’s rumored that a gold miner came to town and wanted something to drink after a long day of panning for gold. The bartender suggested the “Martinez Special”. After a few of these specials were consumed, the “z” was dropped and the Martini was born!

The Central Pacific Railway arrived shortly after the gold miners and became part of the Transcontinental Line, an important part of the shipping chain. John Muir, the naturalist, and founder of The Sierra Club, owned property in Martinez. In exchange for allowing the railway to build a track on his property, Muir asked for a station, enabling him to ship his crops. John Muir Station Road is still there but is now a bustling shopping center. Muir’s house still stands on Alhambra Avenue. The property also features the Don Vicente Martinez Adobe, built by the son of the original rancho owner.

Martinez has more to brag about too………… claiming Joe DiMaggio as a native son. It’s also home to the famous Christian Bros Winery. Now closed, wine was shipped country-wide until 1932.

Martinez hosts several unique events annually including Stargazing and Ice Cream Social, King of the County BBQ & Music Festival, Historic Home Tour. Its waterfront has a yacht club, a thriving marina offering fishing and boating. You’ll find 16 city parks and acres of open space within the city’s 12 square miles with hiking, biking, basketball courts, soccer fields, baseball fields, bocce ball courts, a 10,000 square foot skate park, and the Rankin Aquatic Center, and more.

Many of Martinez’s buildings are over 125 years old. Homes for sale include many that were constructed from the ’70s to the ’90s. There are also a significant number of historic and also new construction homes.
