Union City

Small town feel in the center of the Bay Area.

Welcome to Union City

Named after founders John & William Horners steamboat “The Union”, Union City was settled in 1850 and began to grow during the Gold Rush. Disappointed gold miners discovered that the fertile soil was ideal for farming. Over the next generation, other industries also began to thrive including salt production, beet sugar factories, and flour mills.

When Union City incorporated in 1959 the communities of Alvarado, Decoto, and New Haven were combined. Alvarado was the original Alameda County seat and the site of the first county courthouse. The courthouse is now a California Historical Landmark. In 1999, the National Civic League named Union City, an All-America City, honoring the hard work that has helped to make it such a great place to live.

Union City residents will find no shortage of entertainment and recreation. A visit to Union Landing will find a 25 screen multiplex, restaurants, shopping, and banking options. For fitness buffs, the city’s brand new Sports Center offers state-of-the-art workout equipment, exercise classes, basketball courts, and even sports massage therapy. The community Leisure Services department maintains a variety of activities and venues for every need.

The Old Alvarado Farmers Market is a popular, year-round stop for fresh produce. In the summer, a weekly concert draws people for food and perishables. Paddy’s Coffee House in the Alvarado district is also the home base for the city’s grassroots arts center and showcases the work of local artists, musicians, and performers. The San Francisco Bay Area Flight 93 Memorial is located in Union City and was the first monument in the US to honor passengers and the crew of this ill-fated flight.

Access to the other towns is a snap as Interstate 880 runs north and south adjacent to the city, and BART also has a station here. Residents are served by the New Haven Unified School District serving more than 13,000 students. The majority of homes in Union City are single-family residences built between 1990 and 1994.
