Hayward

Heart of the Garden of Eden.

Welcome to Hayward

Known as the heart of the bay due to its central location, Hayward is a part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont Metropolitan Area. In the early decades of the 20th Century, the Hayward area became known as the “Heart of the Garden of Eden” because of its temperate climate and fertile soil. Everything – produce, chickens, cattle, flowers – grew in abundance. By the 1950’s Hayward became known as the “Apricot City”.

Located between Fremont and Castro Valley, the city is home to many manufacturing businesses and is also corporate headquarters for national and international companies. The Hayward of today continues to plan for the future, maintaining a balance between the needs of its diverse community and a growing business community.

The newly revitalized downtown is pedestrian-friendly with a mix of housing, retail shops, offices, and restaurants. The new Civic Center serves as the focal point for this revitalization.

A former WWII fighter base, the Hayward Executive Airport serves the transportation needs of local businesses and residents. Over 450 aircraft are based at the airport from single-engine airplanes to sophisticated corporate jets. Aviation products and services are provided by 40 support companies.

The City of Hayward offers unique recreational opportunities, in addition to city parks, visit the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center. Perched above the salt marsh at the edge of the bay, the center features exhibits, programs, and activities designed to inspire a sense of appreciation, respect, and stewardship for the bay. Don’t overlook the historic Hayward Plunge, the Japanese Gardens, Meek West Terrace, the Mt. Eden Mansion, and, of course, the Rowell Ranch Rodeo.

Hayward students are served by the Hayward Unified School District. Higher education needs are met by Chabot Junior College and California State University, East Bay. There are also several public charter schools, early childhood education centers, and many private institutions as well, including parochial schools, industrial and business schools.

Hayward homes for sale include many single-family homes that were built from 1940 to 1969. There is also a large percentage that was constructed between 1970 and 1994 as well as newer homes and some historic residences.
