Welcome to San Ramon

Once a part of Mission San Jose providing grazing land for mission sheep, it later became Rancho San Ramon. American settlers arrived in 1850 when a couple of named Norris purchased acreage from the owner of the land grant. Many of San Ramon’s founding families are remembered today because various hills, streets, and canyons carry their names. As often happens, San Ramon has had several names including Limerick, Brevensville, and Lynchville. When the first post office was established, it was called San Ramon and the name stuck.

The San Ramon we know today is a dynamic, mid-sized city of 72,000 located in Contra Costa County. With diverse topography of flat land and rolling hills, the area still has much-undeveloped land surrounding the area. Much of San Ramon's residential real estate was built between the ’70s and the ’90s.

San Ramon has recreation bragging rights with over 50 parks within the city. Dog parks, sports parks, tot lots, school parks, senior center & parks, aquatic park, fire truck park, the outdoor recreation here knows no limits. San Ramon has hiking trails for all levels of fitness, from flat trails dotted with benches, to the Las Trampas Regional Wilderness Trail that will have you hiking uphill for a couple of hours, to the Iron Horse Trail that will take you through adjoining cities where you can stop your hike or ride for lunch, there will be something that will fit your needs.

Students are served by the San Ramon Unified School District. There are 21 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, and 4 high schools. In addition, there are also several alternative education programs. The schools here are highly acclaimed as are schools in neighboring towns. The Diablo Valley College also has a branch campus in San Ramon.

San Ramon City Center will become a community gathering place and town center. The project will encompass over 2 million square feet of space on 39 acres. The center will feature a neighborhood atmosphere blending community gather, living, shopping, working, and dining experiences. A gathering place and plaza are planned along with a new City Hall and Library. San Ramon leaders expect that the City Center will become the place to be for dining and entertainment.
